Undoubtedly, analogue travel is having a huge moment. People are slowly but surely getting fed up with technology and are travelling more and more to get off their screens.
Whether they are choosing to get away with their closest friends or planning family getaways, an increasing number of travellers are picking architecturally distinctive villas in unique natural landscapes. One such luxury stay, Desert Doghouse, in Joshua Tree, California, is at the forefront of this trend.
“The term analogue travel has become a buzzword, and we have been leaning into it,” says Adrian Laurent from Desert Doghouse’s management team.
“Not because the term describes us particularly well, but because we have always felt that small details, done right, can create an environment where humans connect better. Unsurprisingly, it turns out that access to complicated technology is rarely the driver of great memories.”
A place you never have to leave

This luxury homestay is distinctive as it’s one of the few two-storey villas in the California high desert. The 4,500-square-foot estate boasts six bedrooms, three different living rooms, and a hidden secret room. Reminiscent of an elegant design-forward boutique resort, the Desert Doghouse’s interiors feature thoughtfully curated furnishings and décor pieces. No two rooms are alike; each one has its own character and style.
On weekends, the villa often hosts gatherings, birthday celebrations, and family reunions, with amenities including an alfresco dining space, an expansive outdoor pool with shade structures and a fire pit, a movie room, a library, and a pickleball court. During the week, the rental stay transforms into a hub for West Coast creatives and is used regularly for film and photo shoots.
“Analogue, for us, means better in person. Since opening the Doghouse as a third space available for productions, special events, and special occasions, we have felt that the house attracts a clientele that is hungry for that,” adds Adrian Laurent from the Desert Doghouse.
“Often, it’s creatives who feel drawn to the aesthetic of the house, and with them come their ideas, their creative spirit, and maybe a different level of conversation.”
The art of unplugging

While this luxury homestay is organised around a plethora of well-appointed amenities, what makes it truly stand out is its ability to help guests disconnect.
Inside, visitors listen to the vinyl record player, cook and share meals around the large dining table, play analogue games, read a book, or simply talk with each other. Outside, guests can lounge by the oversized pool, take in the sights of the quiet expanse of the unobstructed Joshua Tree landscape, and spend nights stargazing around the sunken fire pit.
“We believe that when luxury includes lifelong memories, it becomes priceless,” notes Adrian Laurent. “The conversations that happen at the house, the new friendships and collaborations that are formed, and the laughs around the table validate everything we are working to bring to do in the desert.”
At the Desert Doghouse, guests have the luxury to stay as connected as they like. While cellular signals are strong and Wi-Fi is available, smart devices often yield to board games and the natural rhythm of the desert, where sunrises and sunsets dictate the tempo of the day.

When I drove to the Desert Doghouse, I remembered that the management team told me there is some magic at the house that must be experienced instead of explained.
I must say that I don’t know whether it is the antiques, the lighting, the plants, or the endless desert that simply operates on a different timeline, but after taking a leisurely swim, playing board games with my friends, and stargazing for a few hours, something noticeably shifted in the short amount of time I was there.
When I arrived at the house, I had felt burned out and exhausted. Leaving the house just 24 hours later, I felt like a new person. I was much more relaxed and felt rejuvenated.
The Desert Doghouse shows us how luxury travel doesn’t always need to mean hyper-connectivity, automated convenience, or ‘more’. Sometimes, true indulgence just means being fully present and enjoying the quietude, bonding with your close ones, and somehow simply unplugging.
