Caroline Cooper travels to Austria’s Ötztal Valley for an luxury alpine escape with links to one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
Nestled deep within Austria’s Ötztal Valley, Sölden has long been revered by serious skiers for its exceptional snow conditions and extensive terrain.
Today, this high altitude Alpine destination is attracting a wider audience, combining world-class skiing with contemporary luxury, modern infrastructure and a connection to one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
Snow-sure skiing at altitude
Conditions can make or break a ski holiday, and in an era of increasingly unpredictable winters, altitude is everything. Sölden’s runs stretch from 1,350 metres in the village to 3,340 metres at the summit, making it one of Austria’s most dependable destinations when the forecast elsewhere looks uncertain.
Two glaciers – Rettenbach and Tiefenbach – extend the season well beyond the traditional winter window, drawing professional race teams and leisure skiers alike in search of guaranteed snow.
The reward for all that height isn’t just reliable conditions. The resort’s BIG3 viewing platforms, all sitting above 3,000 metres, offer some of the most spectacular panoramas anywhere in the Alps and on a clear day, more than 250 peaks stretch to the horizon, providing a backdrop that makes even the most familiar run feel quietly extraordinary.
A ski area for every ability

What makes Sölden particularly appealing is the range of its terrain. For those starting their ski journey, the wide, forgiving pistes around Giggijoch are perfect along with excellent tuition from Skischule Sölden, one of the resort’s longest-established ski schools, which offers offering lessons for all ages and abilities.
Intermediates can spend days exploring long cruising runs connecting multiple sectors. Advanced skiers will find plenty to test themselves on steep descents from Gaislachkogl, challenging blacks, and off-piste opportunities when conditions suit.
The glacier areas add another dimension entirely with wide open slopes and a dramatic backdrop of ice formations that reward both newcomers and seasoned skiers.
The future of Alpine infrastructure
Luxury skiing is as much about convenience as snow, and Sölden excels in both. The resort operates one of the most advanced lift systems in the Alps, with high-capacity gondolas and state-of-the-art chairlifts eliminating long queues and time wasted on the slopes. The Gaislachkogl gondola is a highlight in itself, ascending rapidly from the valley floor to the heart of the mountain, with stunning views of the surrounding Ötztal Alps.
007 ELEMENTS: A Bond experience above the clouds

High above Sölden, carved into the summit of the Gaislachkogl mountain at 3,048 metres, lies one of the Alps’ most extraordinary attractions, 007 ELEMENTS.
More than a traditional museum, this immersive James Bond experience transports visitors inside the world of the legendary secret agent through a series of cinematic galleries, interactive installations and behind the scenes moments from the Bond franchise.
Built directly into the mountain, the futuristic structure feels like something taken straight from a Bond storyline itself, part secret headquarters, part modern architectural masterpiece.
Each room feels like a dramatic space, providing all the cinematic ingredients of a 007 adventure, from iconic locations and thrilling action sequences to gadgets, technology and music.
The experience has a special connection to Sölden, as the resort provided the spectacular backdrop for Spectre, with many of the film’s most memorable Alpine scenes shot on the surrounding glaciers and peaks. Standing in the same landscape where Bond raced across the snow makes the experience feel less like an exhibition and more like stepping into the film itself.
Dining at the top of the world: ice Q

No element of Sölden’s appeal has captured the imagination quite like ice Q, perched at 3,048 metres on the summit of Gaislachkogl and conveniently positioned next to 007 ELEMENTS.
Inside, the restaurant splits across two levels. The ground floor offers a modern tasting menu, with a vegetarian version available alongside à la carte classics including beef consommé, Wiener schnitzel and rib-eye steak. Upstairs, the lounge serves tapas in a more relaxed setting, and outdoor terraces provide open-air dining when the mountain weather allows.
The cooking leans into Alpine identity, regional ingredients, refined technique, dishes rooted in Tyrolean tradition but presented with a contemporary sensibility. It is the kind of menu that would be noteworthy in a city restaurant, at the top of a mountain it feels genuinely exceptional.
The wine list deserves its own mention. The PINO 3000 is particularly worth seeking out, a Pinot Noir blend that matures in a custom built cellar within the restaurant itself, at over 3,000 metres above sea level.
Easy access and Alpine sophistication
Despite its dramatic setting, Sölden is surprisingly straightforward to reach. Innsbruck Airport is just over an hour away, with Salzburg and Munich providing additional gateways. Once in resort, visitors find a destination that balances luxury with genuine Tyrolean warmth, stylish hotels, proper spas, and restaurants that take food seriously, from the valley floor to the summit.
Sölden is a standout ski location that is hard to beat, because it operates at every level simultaneously. The skiing is serious, the infrastructure is exceptional, and the hospitality is refined without being sterile. Add a Michelin-listed restaurant hanging from a mountainside at 3,000 metres, and a Bond exhibition next door, and the result is a destination that earns its license to thrill.
