Megan Lawton experiences the quintessential London stay at this elegant boutique hotel just moments from the buzz of the city.
Tucked away on a quiet residential street in Knightsbridge, The Egerton House Hotel is less like a central London hotel and more like an elegant townhouse ready to welcome guests.
Located inside a red-brick Victorian townhouse dating back to 1843, Egerton House has just 28 rooms, and that intimate, homely feel shapes the entire experience. The minute I arrived, and a smiling doorman greeted me, offering a welcome cup of tea or glass of fizz, I knew I was in safe hands.
Hotel
Furry friends are most welcome at this hotel
House by name and nature too, the interiors, while polished and elegant, offer a sense of comfort, particularly in the bar and lounge spaces, where low sofas and coffee tables invite guests to properly sink in for a few hours, with a martini or coffee in hand depending on your mood.
The bones of the Victorian townhouse remain intact too, which gives the hotel much of its charm. Authentic staircases, polished wooden banisters and heritage details run throughout. Even the smaller touches feel considered, the staff on front-desk who come to know you by name and the snack stand stashed with banana chips, nuts and chocolate honeycomb bites, adding to the feeling that guests can make themselves at home.
Room
The bedroom interiors lean into warm neutrals, classic furnishings and soft textures
Recently refreshed, the bedroom interiors lean into warm neutrals, classic furnishings and soft textures rather than flashy modern luxury.
My room for the night featured muted olive tones, dark wood wardrobes and watercolour artworks which gave the space a timeless feel, while thoughtful details, from antique style furniture, generous storage and a proper writing desk, made it somewhere you actually wanted to spend time.
At the centre of the space was an enormous, engulfing bed, layered with crisp white linens and towering pillows that guaranteed a good night’s sleep. After a day in central London, returning to such a peaceful room felt like a luxury in itself.
Food and drink
Guests dine across the elegant lounge, breakfast room and bar spaces
Food and drink at The Egerton follows the same philosophy as the rest of the hotel, classic, comforting and quietly elevated. There’s no grand formal restaurant here, instead, guests dine across the elegant lounge, breakfast room and bar spaces, which makes everything feel more relaxed.
Breakfast was the exact start to the day you would want in London, leisurely and accompanied by genuinely excellent coffee. So good I would happily return for a cup, even without a hotel stay. Sitting and flicking through newspapers, watching the surrounding London streets as they came to life, felt wonderfully old-school.
The food served was traditional, but incredibly well done. A light, whipped omelette offered a fresher start to the morning, while other tables tucked into fuller English breakfasts and pastries.
Alongside the classics, Egerton House offers four flavoured shaken martinis: lychee, passionfruit, cherry, and pomegranate
Lunch, however, belonged to the martinis. The Egerton’s special martini lunch service has developed something of a reputation in London, and after trying their martini offering, it’s easy to understand why.
I sampled both vodka and gin versions, dirty and with a twist, and each arrived ice cold in perfectly chilled glasses. Smooth to the point of dangerous, there is a reason so many of the tables around us were sipping them.
The food served alongside them matched the mood perfectly. A delicate salmon platter felt fresh and light, while tomato soup paired with a moreish cheese toastie brought a more comforting touch. Later, steak dishes continued the same approach, simple plates that let the ingredients speak for themselves.
To do

One of The Egerton’s biggest strengths is its location. Being within walking distance of the Victoria and Albert Museum feels like a genuine treat, particularly given the hotel’s partnership with the museum, which offers guests complimentary access to exhibitions throughout their stay.
During our visit, anticipation was building ahead of the new Schiaparelli exhibition opening, with intriguing cases and displays being quietly moved into the building ready for launch. Instead, we spent the afternoon exploring the museum’s immersive theatre and photography exhibitions before wandering back through Knightsbridge for an afternoon of window shopping.
Harrods, the Royal Albert Hall and some of the capital’s best shopping streets are all within easy reach, and it’s even better exploring them with the knowledge that Egerton House and its feeling of calm is just a few minutes away.
In a nutshell
If you’re looking for a quintessential London stay, The Egerton House Hotel feels like exactly the place to book. Despite being tucked away on a quiet residential street, it is moments from the buzz of Knightsbridge and London culture.
What makes The Egerton stand out isn’t anything flashy, but the feeling of being genuinely looked after; thoughtful service, calming interiors, excellent martinis and the sense of returning to a peaceful private residence at the end of a busy day in the city.
