Akgün Akdil discovers the charm of two very different luxury properties on the islands of Kalymos and Leros.

Two Aegean islands, two distinct sensibilities. From Kalymnos’ dramatic coastal energy to Leros’ poetic tranquillity, this story explores two boutique hotels where architecture, interiors and island life come together in effortless harmony.
Dramatic, sun-drenched and irresistibly alive, Kalymnos is an island shaped by both nature and tradition. Famous for its rugged cliffs and deep-rooted sponge-diving heritage, it balances raw landscapes with a warm, welcoming spirit.
Mountain villages tumble toward crystal-clear bays, while everyday life unfolds between the sea, the rock and the light. Kalymnos is an island of contrasts – powerful yet tender, adventurous yet deeply soulful – where the Aegean reveals its most vibrant, elemental beauty.
Unassuming, poetic and quietly captivating, Leros is one of the Aegean’s best-kept secrets. With its rolling hills, neoclassical harbour towns and unspoilt beaches, the island feels refreshingly untouched by mass tourism.
Layers of history – from Byzantine chapels to Italian-era architecture – blend effortlessly with everyday island life, where time moves slowly and beauty reveals itself in subtle details. Leros is not an island that seeks attention; it rewards those who value authenticity, tranquillity and a deeply human connection to place.
Kantouni Beach Boutique Hotel
Kantouni Beach Boutique Hotel is a coastal retreat on the sun-drenched island of Kalymnos
Some places don’t merely host a holiday – they awaken a feeling. On the sun-drenched island of Kalymnos, framed by dramatic mountains and the endless shimmer of the Aegean Sea, Kantouni Beach Boutique Hotel is one of those rare retreats that instantly resonates.
Here, mornings taste of salt and sunlight, time loosens its grip, and days unfold in a soft palette of white, blue and golden glow.
Set directly on the velvety sands of Kantouni Beach, this reimagined four-star boutique hotel embodies a refined, contemporary elegance that feels both effortless and deeply connected to its surroundings.
Clean architectural lines, thoughtful details and natural materials define the aesthetic, yet the soul of the place remains unmistakably Greek – warm, sincere and refreshingly unpretentious. Luxury here never demands attention; it reveals itself quietly, through an ocean-facing view, intuitive comfort and a sense of ease.
Beyond its design language, Kantouni Beach Boutique Hotel offers a deeply restorative experience.
The rhythm of the waves, the softness of the light, and the island’s legendary sunsets combine to create an atmosphere that nourishes the spirit. The hotel’s attentive and gracious staff elevate the stay further, offering service that feels personal, intuitive and genuinely kind.
Open plan layouts create an ambience that is both sophisticated and serene
Fresh from a meticulous renovation, the double rooms and junior suites are conceived as sunlit sanctuaries. A calming palette of soft neutrals, organic textures and fluid, open-plan layouts creates an ambience that is both sophisticated and serene. Super king-size beds promise indulgent nights of rest, while select suites feature private outdoor Jacuzzis, offering a privileged view of the moonlit Aegean.
The views are wide, uninterrupted and quietly mesmerising. Draw back the curtains and the sea is instantly present, glimmering in the morning light and blushing softly at dusk. It’s a view that slows the mind, turning even the simplest moment into something memorable.
Life at Kantouni Beach Boutique Hotel follows the gentle cadence of the Aegean.
Drift effortlessly between pool and shore, stretch out on plush sunbeds with a chilled drink in hand, or wander barefoot along the water’s edge. Time slips by without resistance, carried by the sound of waves and the warmth of the Mediterranean sun.
Dinner is a celebration of flavour and setting, with gourmet dishes served against the backdrop of a stunning sunset across the Aegean
At the heart of the daytime experience, the pool bar keeps the holiday spirit flowing from morning until sunset. Signature cocktails, revitalising drinks, rich coffees, fresh juices and light, healthy snacks are served throughout the day. There is little reason to leave the pool terrace, where deep blue skies merge seamlessly with the sea.
As evening falls, the atmosphere becomes even more enchanting. Dinner turns into a celebration of flavour and setting, with gourmet Mediterranean and international dishes prepared from fresh, vibrant ingredients. With a glass of wine in hand, guests watch as the sun dissolves into the horizon, painting the surrounding landscape in amber, rose and violet.
At Kymata Restaurant and Cocktail Bar, the spirit of the island is translated into taste and mood. Mornings begin with sunlit breakfasts by the water, afternoons unfold with leisurely lunches, and evenings glow with candlelit dinners accompanied by the sound of the sea. And at sunset, Kymata Bar becomes the ultimate vantage point – best enjoyed with one of the barmen’s signature cocktails as the sky melts into gold and pink.
Stylish yet soulful, contemporary yet deeply comforting, Kantouni Beach Boutique Hotel captures the essence of a modern Greek island escape – effortlessly beautiful, quietly luxurious and entirely unforgettable.
Hotel Archontiko Angelou

Archontiko Angelou is a rosé-tinted 19th-century villa that feels gently suspended in time
Set within gardens lush with oleander and jacaranda, Archontiko Angelou is a rosé-tinted 19th-century villa that feels gently suspended in time. For travellers seeking tranquillity, authenticity and a hotel unlike any other in the Dodecanese, this enchanting hideaway on the island of Leros defines under-the-radar elegance.
Just a five-minute stroll from Alinda’s low-key beach – where weathered fishermen mend their nets and tavernas spill casually onto the sand – the old archontikó rises dreamlike among wild meadows and vineyards. In Greek mythology, Leros was sacred to Artemis, goddess of the Hunt, and there remains something unmistakably untamed in its landscape. Nearby, the Italianate village of Agia Marina charms with its biscuit-coloured façades, traditional confectioners, quayside fishing nets and ever-present, photogenic cats.
Vineyards on one side, jacaranda trees with clouds of purple blossoms on the other – and in between, a burgundy-hued stone mansion that seems to belong effortlessly to its surroundings.
One could visit Archontiko Angelou for breakfast alone: an entirely handmade, gluten-free, vegan feast prepared by owner Marianna Angelou, served beneath the jacaranda trees alongside her extraordinary marmalades.
Later, guests retreat to their balconies with a book and a drink, enveloped by silence, birdsong and the rhythmic hum of cicadas. The garden is undeniably the soul of Archontiko Angelou. A tranquil oasis of colour, fragrance and shade, it invites guests to read, play backgammon or enjoy a leisurely drink.

Inside, the atmosphere is an alluring balance of faded grandeur and relaxed, shabby-chic elegance. Farrow and Ball-style wall hues, Gustavian-grey dressing tables, gilt-framed mirrors and glass chandeliers set the tone, while frescoed ceilings quietly recall the villa’s aristocratic past. The modern world is intentionally held at bay – there are no televisions in the rooms – encouraging guests to surrender to a slower, more contemplative rhythm of living.
No two rooms at Archontiko Angelou are alike, each shaped by Marianna’s magpie eye for antiques and detail. While all feature tiled floors and wooden beam ceilings, some offer cosy reading alcoves, others airy balconies overlooking the garden.
Breakfast, enjoyed on the terrace or in the garden, is a daily highlight. Marianna prepares everything herself – cakes, crêpes, artisanal breads, local honey, jams and marmalades – transforming each morning into a celebration of island flavours.
The hotel is proudly vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free, making it the only property on Leros fully dedicated to these dietary needs. A small garden bar invites guests to help themselves to coffee or fresh juice throughout the day, making it an ideal spot to linger with a novel.
While there is no formal restaurant, dinner, crafted with the same care and attention, can be prepared on request.

The history of Archontiko Angelou is as layered as its architecture.
Built in 1895 by Aikaterini Cambouropoulos for her daughter Marika, the villa was designed by an Austrian architect and originally surrounded by rose gardens and vineyards. Marika later married Stavros Angelou, and the couple raised six children here between 1901 and 1921.
In the early 20th century, the Angelou family – based primarily in Egypt but summering on Leros – used the villa as their seasonal retreat. Around 1930, the house was expanded with a tower-like structure, new balconies and a redesigned staircase, reflecting the architectural tastes of the era.
The hotel’s current custodian, Marianna Angelou, is the daughter of the youngest of those six children, Lolos. After years abroad – and even fighting in North Africa during the Second World War – Lolos returned to Leros. In the mid-1970s, already running a small hotel in Lakki, he made the decision to transform the beloved family summer house into the intimate hotel that exists today.
