The new luxury of slow travel: How outdoor living is redefining high-end hospitality
Luxury hospitality is embracing the principles of slow travel, with thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces becoming central to the guest experience rather than simply an added amenity.
From Mediterranean coastlines to alpine resorts, luxury is being redefined not by excess, but by atmosphere. Increasingly, the measure of a hotel is not only its interiors or service, but the quality of time it enables guests to spend outdoors – unrushed, comfortable, and immersed in place.
This shift, often described as slow travel, has quietly repositioned outdoor space from a secondary amenity to a central design priority. Terraces, gardens, and poolside areas are now treated as core extensions of the guest experience rather than decorative additions.
In many cases, they are where the stay is most vividly remembered.
Within this evolving landscape, companies such as Instashade are becoming part of a broader design conversation – supporting hotels, architects, and landscape designers in shaping environments where comfort is carefully controlled, but never visually intrusive.

Paradiso St. Moritz: Where landscape becomes architecture
At Paradiso St. Moritz, perched above the Engadin Valley, the landscape is not a backdrop – it is the experience. Snow-capped peaks, shifting alpine light, and dramatic seasonal change demand outdoor spaces that can perform as confidently as any interior.
Working with Rosendale Design, Instashade delivered a bespoke shading scheme for the venue’s panoramic terrace. The installation combined multiple Nova Parasols and Café Series Parasols, chosen specifically for their ability to perform in high-altitude conditions while maintaining a restrained architectural profile.
In this environment, specification matters as much as appearance. Engineered base systems provide stability in strong alpine winds, while high-performance canopy materials are designed to withstand intense UV exposure and rapid changes in weather.
Custom finishes were developed to align the parasols with the wider material language of the terrace, allowing them to sit within the composition rather than interrupt it.
The result is a space that remains fully operational across changing conditions – yet visually uninterrupted. Guests move between shade and open sky without ever feeling the presence of infrastructure, only its effect.

Outdoor rooms, not outdoor additions
Across luxury hospitality, outdoor space is increasingly being treated as architecture in its own right. The logic is simple: if guests are spending more time outside, then those environments must carry the same design intelligence as interiors.
This is particularly visible in destinations where climate and scenery are integral to the experience. In the Mediterranean, long hours of sun and warmth make terraces and pool decks natural extensions of daily life. In alpine regions, the challenge is more complex – balancing exposure, shelter, and rapidly shifting conditions while preserving uninterrupted views.
Yet the expectation is the same in both contexts: outdoor environments should feel effortless. They should function seamlessly, without revealing the systems that make them comfortable.
This is where shading has undergone a quiet transformation – from functional necessity to spatial tool. No longer an afterthought, it is now part of the early design conversation, alongside architecture, landscape, and interior planning.

The architecture of comfort
Modern luxury is increasingly defined by subtle control rather than visible intervention. The best outdoor spaces do not announce how they work; they simply feel right.
Shading plays a central role in this balance. It allows light to be softened without being blocked, heat to be moderated without enclosure, and space to remain open while still feeling protected.
Instashade’s product range -including its Nova Series, Café Series, and large-format commercial parasols – reflects this shift. The emphasis is not on visual dominance, but on proportion, restraint, and adaptability across different service needs and environments.
In practice, this means terraces can transition throughout the day: from breakfast in diffused morning light, to long lunches under filtered shade, to evening service as the sun drops behind the horizon. The space remains constant; only the atmosphere changes.
