Notably, the building was once the headquarters for Papelera Española, an old paper factory. Original features including stained-glass windows, a functioning wrought-iron and mahogany cage elevator, and elegant façades have been carefully preserved by architect Antonio Obrador, while the interiors embrace soft palettes and contemporary furnishings.

Alongside its relaxing spa, delicious restaurant, and lounge, the hotel offers a calm atmosphere that feels distinctly Madrileño.

Ideal for both leisure and business travellers, the hotel celebrates local craftsmanship and culture through artwork, gastronomy and personalised service, all while maintaining a warm and welcoming feel.

Arriving at Hotel Urso feels serene and polished – the hotel’s impressive historic façade leads through to bright interiors and airy lounges filled with natural light, plush sofas, curated book shelves, and leafy plants.

The hotel’s rooms and suites are spacious and understated, including muted tones, oak floors, crisp white linens and lavish furnishings. Large windows allow plenty of natural light in, while details such as handcrafted ceramics and local art elevate the spaces and make them feel welcoming.

My junior suite corner room with triple aspect floor-to-ceiling windows was classically elegant, featuring soft shades of cream and grey. My four-poster bed with a wool headboard was big and comfortable, while the marble bathroom containing the hotel’s own branded toiletries felt spa-like.

I especially enjoyed the nightly turndown service with bedtime chocolates.

The menu celebrates high-quality local ingredients with dishes that feel modern while remaining rooted in tradition, from fresh seafood and grilled meats to vegetable dishes and jamon croquettes.

Impressively, celebrities including Ana de Arms and Jennifer Connolly have been spotted at Casa Felisa and, as expected, service is both amiable and attentive. Make sure you order the homemade millefeuille for dessert – it is really indulgent and tasty.

Breakfast is served beneath the hotel’s striking glass conservatory with pitched roof. Guests can enjoy an extensive buffet of fresh pastries, Spanish cheeses, cured meats, seasonal fruits and cakes, alongside an à la carte menu offering eggs, pancakes and local specialities.

The hotel’s lounge bar provides a cosy setting for evening cocktails or afternoon coffee, attracting both guests and locals with its intimate atmosphere and sophisticated design.

I loved its tranquil atmosphere, historical roots, and genuine sense of place, all of which made returning to the hotel after a day in the city feel like a true haven. Hotel Urso offers what feels like an elevated and authentically local experience of Madrid, which is a real treat for both new and returning guests.
